Crazy Quilt Twilt

Posted in Classes. Workshops & Lectures, Silk Ribbon Embroidery, Twitter Quilts...Twilts tagged , , , , , , , , , at 2:57 PM by Shelley Swanland

It’s been a while since I posted and I thought it was about time to get started again. Alot has been going on. Although Cathedral Window Quilting has been my passion I have missed Silk Ribbon Embroidery. I bet you would never have guessing looking at some of my Twilts. 🙂 I have been doing quite a bit of that recently as well as more dyeing of ribbon and rayon trim and Crazy Quilting. What a fabulous opportunity to use all the stuff I have been collecting.

So, my re-entry into blogging is a Crazy Quilt Twilt. I belong to a group of ladies that have totally inspired me so you’re going to be seeing even more crazy quilting and embellishing.

About a year and a half ago I started doing Quilt Shows with Georgia Puga from Georgia’s Quilting Obsession. It has been quite an adventure traveling all around. We ask ourselves frequently why we work this hard but we’re having a blast. Last month I helped move Georgia’s shop to a new location in Beaumont, California. She can now be found at 709 Beaumont Avenue. There’s lots more room and I have classes scheduled there. Check out her website: http://www.georgiasquiltingobsession.com/index.html

Happy Quilting and Twilting!!

Wild Roses

Posted in Classes. Workshops & Lectures, Silk Ribbon Embroidery, Twitter Quilts...Twilts tagged , , , , , , , , , , at 7:51 PM by Shelley Swanland

“Wild Roses”, this Tuesday’s Twilt, combines the technique I developed ten years ago, Cathedral Windows by Machine with a technique I love and had missed, Silk Ribbon mbroidery. The borders of this Twilt have three-dimensional triangles with their bias folds rolled into curves, the part that is Cathedral Windows.

In the center I have a bouquet of roses. embroidered with silk ribbon, accented with pearl cotton and beads.

The background is a crinkled batik that I quilted with different colors of thread. The ribbons used for the roses came from my collection of silk ribbon that I have painted and dyed.

I hope you like it!

A Basket of Silk Flowers

Posted in Silk Ribbon Embroidery, Twitter Quilts...Twilts tagged , , , , , , , , , at 9:00 AM by Shelley Swanland

It’s hot and muggy here in So Cal and I am looking forward to Spring. I found this block in my UFO pile. These flowers won’t wilt in this heat. I thought it would make a wonderful Twilt, “A Basket of Silk Flowers”.

I used a handkerchief for the basket and lots of silk ribbon with pearl cotton for the roses, fuchsias, iris and other flowers. I hand dyed the varigated silk ribbon in the roses and iris.

I think the border fabric might be from the 80’s. Does that date me?

Enjoy!

Tuesday’s Twilt … Wisteria

Posted in Silk Ribbon Embroidery, Twitter Quilts...Twilts tagged , , , at 10:10 AM by Shelley Swanland

WisteriaHaving crashed for a few days after my latest road trip I am refreshed and ready to get to work.

Todays Twilt is “Wisteria”, silk ribbon embroidery on crinkled fabric with machine  stitching and couched  glittery threads. The frame of this piece has Cathedral Window corners. I have some ideas for more complex Cathedral Window corners coming up in future twilts.

Wisteria DetailThe silk ribbon I used is from my collection of ribbons that I painted and dyed a while back. I have really enjoyed revisiting the silk ribbon work that I enjoyed so much in the past. Expect to keep seeing more.

It’s Sweet and Simple this Twilt Tuesday

Posted in Silk Ribbon Embroidery, Twitter Quilts...Twilts tagged , , , , , , at 7:45 AM by Shelley Swanland

Sweet & SimpleI just got back from the Seven Sister’s Quilt Show in San Luis Obispo, California and was worn out and didn’t have a lot of time for this weeks piece. But, that just goes to show how quick, easy and satisfying these little Twilts can be.

I started with a embroidered paper pieced basket block from my unfinished project stash. This was a left over piece from a couple of little wall hangings I made at least 15 years ago. It was too pretty to waste. Simple & Sweet Detail

I sewed the lot cabin strips on through the batting and back as I worked my way out to the outer edges. There are several Liberty of London type cotton lawn. These are very soft, light weight fabrics with wonderful prints. The added flowers are plastic molded flowers from Australia that have just been waiting for an opportunity to shine. I was quite satisfied with this project.

I would love to see your Twilts. Drop me a line and I will be happy to link to your Blog or send me a picture and I will feature it here. For more about Twilts see Twitter Quilts….Twilts.

Twilt Tuesday Brings Just a Hint of Summer

Posted in Silk Ribbon Embroidery, Twitter Quilts...Twilts tagged , , , , at 6:29 AM by Shelley Swanland

The Bloggers Quilt Festival Spring 2009 is still going on so please visit Amy’s site and the over 400 entries and my entry, Memories & Merlot, as well.

Just a Hint of SummerIt was over 90 degrees here yesterday and is supposed to be again today. Then it should cool down to normal spring temperatures again. That was enough to remind me that Summer is just around the corner.

“Just a Hint of Summer” features an embroidered Sunflower of hand dyed silk ribbon, pearl cotton and beads on crinkled batik fabric with lots french knots in the Sunflower center.

Just a Hint of Summer Detail

The sunflower batik has beads added and the purple insets are pieced of multiple purple batiks.

I hope that you have been working on a Twilt or two. These little pieces have really sparked my creativity in so many unrelated ways.
