A Basket of Silk Flowers

Posted in Silk Ribbon Embroidery, Twitter Quilts...Twilts tagged , , , , , , , , , at 9:00 AM by Shelley Swanland

It’s hot and muggy here in So Cal and I am looking forward to Spring. I found this block in my UFO pile. These flowers won’t wilt in this heat. I thought it would make a wonderful Twilt, “A Basket of Silk Flowers”.

I used a handkerchief for the basket and lots of silk ribbon with pearl cotton for the roses, fuchsias, iris and other flowers. I hand dyed the varigated silk ribbon in the roses and iris.

I think the border fabric might be from the 80’s. Does that date me?

Enjoy!

Summer Sizzle

Posted in Twitter Quilts...Twilts tagged , , , , , , , at 5:24 PM by Shelley Swanland

Hope everyone is having a nice summer. I just got back to my twilting and made my newest Twilt, “Summer Sizzle”. It’s the middle of August and the batik fabric with the sunflower just screamed Summer. After adding the border fabrics that are, I admit, a little out of my ordinary choices, I machine quilted around the Batik design with a varigated King Tut quilting thread from Superior. I then added french knots.

If you click on the pictures you can see a high resolution version.

Enjoy!

Sunflower Twilt

Posted in Cathedral Windows, Twitter Quilts...Twilts tagged , , , , , , , at 9:00 AM by Shelley Swanland

Summer is getting closer and to celebrate it’s coming I found this block in my UFO box and make it into this Tuesday’s Twilt, “Sunflower”. The petals of this completely template based design are three dimensional and only the inside folds are rolled.

Enjoy!

3D Bowties Twilt

Posted in Cathedral Windows, Twitter Quilts...Twilts tagged , , , , , , at 9:00 AM by Shelley Swanland

This happy little Twilt isn’t a Cathedral Window but surprisingly everything I do, relating to Cathedral Window quilting, is based on this block. The 3D Bowtie has been around for many years.

I used bright batiks and miniature asian prints to make the twelve blocks. Each block uses five squares exactly the same size, three from one print and two from the other. The center square is folded and stitched into the sames of the four patch. When pulled flat you have a three dimensional bowtie knot. It goes together in the same manner as the 3D Spool Twilt.

Cathedral Windows Storm at Sea

Posted in Cathedral Windows, Twitter Quilts...Twilts tagged , , , , , , at 9:00 AM by Shelley Swanland

This was a fun Twilt to make. It uses 3D squares and 3D diamonds. The diamonds require a template but the rest of the piece uses squares and rectangles. I finished, “Storm at Sea”, using the grid and scallop quilting variation.

The quilt below uses the same blocks and hopefully will become a new pattern in the future.

Kitties Jubilee

Posted in Cathedral Windows, Twitter Quilts...Twilts tagged , , , , , , , , at 9:00 AM by Shelley Swanland

The block for this Tuesday’s Twilt, “Kitties Jubilee”, comes from my pattern Berries Jubilee. I used Laurel Burch fabrics for the inside block and the border.

On The Beach

Posted in Cathedral Windows, Twitter Quilts...Twilts tagged , , , , , , at 9:00 AM by Shelley Swanland

This Tuesday’s Twilt, “On the Beach”, is super simple. It uses bias strips folded just like bias tape and laid on top of a white on white square with the folds touching. I stitched across the folds in the opposite direction. Once the top was layered with batting and backing I rolled the bias folds over and stitched them down as part of the quilting.

I know it’s not summer yet but the beach theme is nice to think about for a minute or two. Summer will be here before we know it.

Thread Spools Twilt

Posted in Cathedral Windows, Designs & Patterns, Twitter Quilts...Twilts tagged , , , , , at 10:18 AM by Shelley Swanland

This post is a shout out to the About.com list that has been talking about my 3D Spools quilt and visiting my Blog. They motivated me to get my Twilts going again. My “Thread Spools” Twilt uses the same three-dimensional method as the Bow Tie block that my method of Cathedral Windows is based on. It uses triangles instead of background squares.

Just for the About.com folks here’s a quick tutorial for a 4 1/2″ spool block.

From fabric that looks like wood and white on white fabric cut strips 2 3/4″ each. From the strip make 45″ cuts to get half square triangles with the straight on grain on the long side. Use the 45 degree line on the ruler. You end up flipping the ruler back and forth. A spinning mat helps.

For the colored fabric that represents the thread cut 4″ squares.

Fold the thread fabric in half , right sides out, with the fold to the right and sandwich between a wood triangle and a white triangle, right sides in, lining up the four raw edge corners. The fold of the square should be towards the center of the seam and you should stitch across it. Stitch the seam leaving the first 1/4″ open. I backstitch at the beginning of the seam. Flip the piece around and sew triangles on the other end in the same order and manner.

Open the center square and pull the seam allowances together. Line up the triangles to the right of the seam allowances and sew in the same manner as the previous two seams. Turn the piece around and sew the final seam.

Pull the piece flat. Press from the back spiraling the seams around the center. The seams in the center with look like a little four patch when flattened.

If you want to press towards the dark fabric then clip the two seams beneath the square and press the outer section towards the dark.

Trim up the blocks as necessary. I know this is a quick set of instructions and I might just write up a pattern but I thought you might want to give it a try now. Let me know how you do.

Thanks for the motivation!!!

Hearts and Flowers

Posted in Twitter Quilts...Twilts tagged , , , , , , , at 2:58 PM by Shelley Swanland

Black strips of complimentary black fabrics frame the three Cathedral Window Flowers of “Hearts and Flowers”, this weeks Twilt. These flowers can be found in the border of Lotus Lullaby and Easy Cathedral Window Flowers, two of my patterns. Just a touch of a verigated fancy machine stitch adds a little color to the black strips. I used glass buttons for the flower centers.  Three hearts hang on rayon ribbon from a big bead with a painted dragonfly. Winter is hardly here and I’m thinking of Spring.
