Crazy Quilt Twilt

Posted in Classes. Workshops & Lectures, Silk Ribbon Embroidery, Twitter Quilts...Twilts tagged , , , , , , , , , at 2:57 PM by Shelley Swanland

It’s been a while since I posted and I thought it was about time to get started again. Alot has been going on. Although Cathedral Window Quilting has been my passion I have missed Silk Ribbon Embroidery. I bet you would never have guessing looking at some of my Twilts. 🙂 I have been doing quite a bit of that recently as well as more dyeing of ribbon and rayon trim and Crazy Quilting. What a fabulous opportunity to use all the stuff I have been collecting.

So, my re-entry into blogging is a Crazy Quilt Twilt. I belong to a group of ladies that have totally inspired me so you’re going to be seeing even more crazy quilting and embellishing.

About a year and a half ago I started doing Quilt Shows with Georgia Puga from Georgia’s Quilting Obsession. It has been quite an adventure traveling all around. We ask ourselves frequently why we work this hard but we’re having a blast. Last month I helped move Georgia’s shop to a new location in Beaumont, California. She can now be found at 709 Beaumont Avenue. There’s lots more room and I have classes scheduled there. Check out her website: http://www.georgiasquiltingobsession.com/index.html

Happy Quilting and Twilting!!

Blue Dragonflies

Posted in Twitter Quilts...Twilts tagged , , , , , , at 2:49 PM by Shelley Swanland

Just a quick Twilt for this Tuesday. “Blue Dragonflies” started out with a embroidered block that I picked up from Georgia’s Quilting Obession. The Indigo fabrics came from Cotton in the Cabin. I picked them up quite some time ago and I think they were made in Africa. I placed the block in the center and sewed strips around it log cabin style. Super Simple!

A Basket of Silk Flowers

Posted in Silk Ribbon Embroidery, Twitter Quilts...Twilts tagged , , , , , , , , , at 9:00 AM by Shelley Swanland

It’s hot and muggy here in So Cal and I am looking forward to Spring. I found this block in my UFO pile. These flowers won’t wilt in this heat. I thought it would make a wonderful Twilt, “A Basket of Silk Flowers”.

I used a handkerchief for the basket and lots of silk ribbon with pearl cotton for the roses, fuchsias, iris and other flowers. I hand dyed the varigated silk ribbon in the roses and iris.

I think the border fabric might be from the 80’s. Does that date me?

Enjoy!

Summer Sizzle

Posted in Twitter Quilts...Twilts tagged , , , , , , , at 5:24 PM by Shelley Swanland

Hope everyone is having a nice summer. I just got back to my twilting and made my newest Twilt, “Summer Sizzle”. It’s the middle of August and the batik fabric with the sunflower just screamed Summer. After adding the border fabrics that are, I admit, a little out of my ordinary choices, I machine quilted around the Batik design with a varigated King Tut quilting thread from Superior. I then added french knots.

If you click on the pictures you can see a high resolution version.

Enjoy!

Sunflower Twilt

Posted in Cathedral Windows, Twitter Quilts...Twilts tagged , , , , , , , at 9:00 AM by Shelley Swanland

Summer is getting closer and to celebrate it’s coming I found this block in my UFO box and make it into this Tuesday’s Twilt, “Sunflower”. The petals of this completely template based design are three dimensional and only the inside folds are rolled.

Enjoy!

3D Bowties Twilt

Posted in Cathedral Windows, Twitter Quilts...Twilts tagged , , , , , , at 9:00 AM by Shelley Swanland

This happy little Twilt isn’t a Cathedral Window but surprisingly everything I do, relating to Cathedral Window quilting, is based on this block. The 3D Bowtie has been around for many years.

I used bright batiks and miniature asian prints to make the twelve blocks. Each block uses five squares exactly the same size, three from one print and two from the other. The center square is folded and stitched into the sames of the four patch. When pulled flat you have a three dimensional bowtie knot. It goes together in the same manner as the 3D Spool Twilt.

Cathedral Windows Storm at Sea

Posted in Cathedral Windows, Twitter Quilts...Twilts tagged , , , , , , at 9:00 AM by Shelley Swanland

This was a fun Twilt to make. It uses 3D squares and 3D diamonds. The diamonds require a template but the rest of the piece uses squares and rectangles. I finished, “Storm at Sea”, using the grid and scallop quilting variation.

The quilt below uses the same blocks and hopefully will become a new pattern in the future.

Kitties Jubilee

Posted in Cathedral Windows, Twitter Quilts...Twilts tagged , , , , , , , , at 9:00 AM by Shelley Swanland

The block for this Tuesday’s Twilt, “Kitties Jubilee”, comes from my pattern Berries Jubilee. I used Laurel Burch fabrics for the inside block and the border.

On The Beach

Posted in Cathedral Windows, Twitter Quilts...Twilts tagged , , , , , , at 9:00 AM by Shelley Swanland

This Tuesday’s Twilt, “On the Beach”, is super simple. It uses bias strips folded just like bias tape and laid on top of a white on white square with the folds touching. I stitched across the folds in the opposite direction. Once the top was layered with batting and backing I rolled the bias folds over and stitched them down as part of the quilting.

I know it’s not summer yet but the beach theme is nice to think about for a minute or two. Summer will be here before we know it.

Cathedral Window Sampler

Posted in Cathedral Windows, Classes. Workshops & Lectures, Designs & Patterns tagged , , , at 2:25 PM by Shelley Swanland

I have been working a few shows lately and sold a few of my pattern, “Cathedral Window Sampler”. It’s available for $9.25 plus $1.25 postage in the US. Email me if you’re interested in purchasing one. Click on the pictures to see high res versions of the Sampler and the Tradition variation on Flickr. I promised I would post some info on how to finish the Sampler so that it looks Traditional.  It won’t make much sense if you haven’t bought the pattern but for those who have, here goes:

In the sample at the right I used red for the background and beige prints for Fabric A and Fabric B. I chose an additional floral print for the window panes. Cut 6 squares 2″ each and 8 squares 2 1/2 ” each. Cut the 2 1/2″ squares in half diagonally.

Before you assemble the top, baste a floral triangle on top of each of the 3D triangles lining up the raw edges and centering the points.

Assemble the top. You will have floppy triangles on top of each 3D triangle. When you baste the quilt, center a 2″ floral square on top of each 3D square.

When quilting eliminate the grid and just roll the bias folds over the raw edges and stitch them down by machine. Remeber to just stitch to the point where the folds meet, take one stitch across and then continue. It isn’t necessary to stitch the points.

I will be at the Quilts Inc. show in Chicago so if you’re there please come by and say Hi! I will be in Monica’s Quilt & Bead booth. Thanks to all you who have been so supportive!!
